Acropolis

The Acropolis of the fifth century BC is the most accurate reflection of the splendour, power and wealth of Athens at its greatest peak, the golden age of Perikles. In the mid-fifth century BC, when the Acropolis became the seat of the Athenian League and Athens was the greatest cultural centre of its time, Perikles initiated an ambitious building project which lasted the entire second half of the fifth century BC. Athenians and foreigners alike worked on this project, receiving a salary of one drachma a day. The temples on the north side of the Acropolis housed primarily the earlier Athenian cults and those of the Olympian gods, while the southern part of the Acropolis was dedicated to the cult of Athena in her many qualities: as Polias (patron of the city), Parthenos, Pallas, Promachos (goddess of war), Ergane (goddess of manual labour) and Nike (Victory).

The Ancient Agora

Situated to the north-west of the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora of Athens was originally established as the administrative and trade centre of the city – hence its name, the ‘trade marketplace’. The Agora witnessed the Panathenaic Procession, the greatest celebration in the ancient city of Athens, memorialising the unification of Attica under King Theseus. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the Agora became the city centre by 5 BC, and was home to secular and sacred activities that were practised in a multitude of public buildings – many of which still stand in ruins. Throughout its turbulent history, the Agora survived multiple sacks, suffering its most serious damage by the Persians in 480 BC, the Romans under Syllas in 86 BC, and the Heruli in 267 AC. Finally abandoned in the sixth century, the area eventually became covered by houses and churches. The ruins of the Ancient Agora remained buried and forgotten for 1,400 years, until extensive excavations in the 19th and 20th centuries revealed its archaeological treasures

Stoa of Attalos

The impressive Stoa of Attalos is a restored building on the eastern side of the Ancient Agora. Named after King Attalus II of Pergamon, who gave it to the city as a gift, the Stoa was erected between 159 and 138 BC. It was, at the time, the longest free-standing, roofed building in the city. Designed to house the city’s commercial activities, the two storey structure measured 120 metres long, and contained 21 stores and workshops. With walls constructed entirely of limestone, the doors, door jambs, staircases, columns and wall studs were all of white Pentelic marble.

Within an hour from IST you’re at Sounio for a swim!

Sounio Temple of Poseidon

Sounion was fortified in the nineteenth year of the Peloponnesian War (413 BCE) for the purpose of protecting the passage of the cornships to Athens,[6]and was regarded from that time as one of the principal fortresses of Attica. In 413 BC, during the Peloponnesian War against the Spartans, the Athenians fortified the site with a wall and towers to prevent it from falling into Spartan hands. This would have threatened Athens’ seaborne grain supply route from Euboea.

Famous places to visit!

At the foot of Mount Parnassos, within the angle formed by the twin rocks of the Phaedriades, lies the Pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi, which had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. Delphi was regarded as the centre of the world. According to mythology, it is here that the two eagles sent out by Zeus from the ends of the universe to find the navel of the world met. The sanctuary of Delphi, set within a most spectacular landscape, was for many centuries the cultural and religious centre and symbol of unity for the Hellenic world. The history of Delphi begins in prehistory and in the myths of the ancient Greeks. In the beginning the site was sacred to Mother Earth and was guarded by the terrible serpent Python, who was later killed by Apollo.

The temple of Aphaia stands on a pine-clad hill in northeast Aegina. It is the most important monument in the sanctuary of Aphaia, which appears to have been founded on a site used for worship since the Mycenaean period.

Mycenae ‘Rich in Gold’, the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon, first sung by Homer in his epics, is the most important and richest palatial centre of the Late Bronze Age in Greece. Its name was given to one of the greatest civilizations of Greek prehistory, the Mycenaean civilization, while the myths related to its history have inspired poets and writers over many centuries, from the Homeric epics and the great tragedies of the Classical period to contemporary literary and artistic creation. Perseus, son of Zeus and Dana?, daughter of Akrisios, king of Argos and descendant of Danaos, is traditionally considered as its mythicalfounder. Pausanias (2, 16, 3) reports that Perseus named the new city Mycenae after the pommel (mykes) of his sword, which fell there, or after the Perseia spring, discovered there under the root of a mushroom (mykes). According to the myth, Perseus’s descendants reigned at Mycenae for three generations. After the last of them, Eurystheas, died childless, the Mycenaeans chose Atreus, son of Pelops, father of Agamemnon and Menelaos, as their king.

In western Peloponnese, in the beautiful valley of the Alpheios river, lies the most celebrated sanctuary of ancient Greece. Dedicated to Zeus, the father of the gods. Although secluded near the west coast of the Peloponnese, Olympia became the most important religious and athletic centre in Greece. Its fame rests upon the Olympic Games, the greatest national festival and a highly prestigious one world-wide, which was held every four years to honour Zeus.

Santorini, known since ancient times as Thira, is one of the most famous islands in the world. The fact that you can sit in front of the caldera, enjoy local dishes, a drink or a coffee while gazing at the remarkable beauty of an active volcano is priceless! Santorini’s volcano is one of the few active volcanoes on Greek and European land The islands that form Santorini came into existence as a result of intensive volcanic activity; twelve huge eruptions occurred, one every 20,000 years approximately, and each violent eruption caused the collapse of the volcano’s central part creating a large crater (caldera). The volcano, however, managed to recreate itself over and over again.

Welcome to Greece’s most famous cosmopolitan island. According to mythology, Mykonos was formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules. And did you know that the island took its name from the grandson of Apollo, “Mykonos”?

By far the largest island of the Dodecanese, also known as the “Island of the Sun God Helios”, Rhodes island combines a variety of characteristics that make it unique as a travel destination. Rhodes is one of the most beautiful islands in the Aegean Sea. With crystal clear endless beautiful beaches, spectacular sunsets, and a UNESCO World Heritage Medieval City to explore.

Crete simply has it all! Crete is the largestisland in Greece, and the fifth largest one in the Mediterranean Sea. Here, you can admire the remnants of brilliant civilizations, explore glorious beaches, impressive mountainscapes. Crete is, after all, a small universe teeming with beauties and treasures that you will probably need a lifetime to uncover! Knossos was the most prominent centre of the Minoan Civilisation, one of the magnificent civilisations of human kind. The renowned ancient city with the palace is the largest and most typical archaeological site ever discovered on Crete. According to tradition, it was the seat of the legendary king Minoa. Apart from being the royal family’s residence, it was also the administrative and religious centre for the whole region.

Rhodes is one of the most beautiful islands in the Aegean Sea. With crystal clear endless beautiful beaches, spectacular sunsets, and a UNESCO World Heritage Medieval City to explore.

What better place to study business and learn about a global community than the country where it existed in 90BC.

Delos

It is estimated that, circa 90 B.C., about 30,000 people lived on this small island, which is no more than a dot on the map of the Mediterranean. The names inscribed on the tombstones in the ancient cemetery provide us with evidence that during the 2nd c. B.C., apart from the island’s majority of Athenian and Roman residents, Delos was populated by folk from most Mediterranean cities: from the Peloponnese and Italy, from mainland regions, Central, Western Greece and Macedonia, Thrace, the Black Sea and Asia Minor, from the Aegean Islands, Cyprus, Crete, and faraway places including Troas, Mysia, Aiolis, Ionia, Lydia, Caria, Lycia, Bithynia, Paflagonia, Pontus, Cappadocia, Pisidia, Pamphilia, Cilicia, Syria, Media, Phoenicia, Palestine, Libya, Arabia and Egypt. At this time, all these people, in spite of their varied nationalities and different historical and cultural backgrounds, managed to forge a peaceable society. They communicated with each other in spoken and written Greek, the inter-national language of the period, adopted the Greek lifestyle, lived in Greek-style houses and built Greek temples, where they freely worshiped the gods of their homelands. The islanders worked companionably and enjoyed community life, while their children played together, studied at same Gymnasium, and trained in the same Palaestrae. So, perhaps for the first time in human history, in this small corner of the earth almost all the Mediterranean peoples co-existed in harmony. (A Global Society!)The ships, arriving continuously at the harbours of Delos, carried not only merchandise but also people, news and ideas from almost every Mediterranean city. The whole world seemed like a small neighborhood ringing the sea that brought them together and brings us together. It is estimated that at the beginning of the 1st century BC, some 30.000 people were living on this little island that is no more than a dot on the map of the Mediterranean, and that it is likely that 750,000 tons of merchandise could be moved through its ports in a year.

Student FAQs

You will start seeing the university using the new branded materials from September 1, 2023.

  • What is the reason for the change? And what does it mean for the university?

We decided to change our name to Wrexham University as a move to unify us as a university to the place we are proud to call home. This coupling of place with name, is a move to strengthen the identity of the university with the community surrounding it. You will be part of something special as a student starting with us at this exciting time, as we connect with our local community and wider audiences through our rebrand.

From September 2023 along with our name change, we are launching a rebrand of the university, which centres around being rooted in community and powered by progress. The evolution of our brand reflects the transformative education we offer, along with the enormous opportunity we provide for our students.

  • Will the University’s name affect my graduation, degree or certificate?

No, the name change will not affect your graduation or next steps after university.

After September, certificates will start being issued as Wrexham University. A covering letter will be sent out with each certificate to outline the Universities name change, this will help avoid confusion for future employers.

Current certificates are still being produced in the name of Glyndŵr University.

If you complete your studies prior to the official rebrand launch your certificate will state Glyndŵr University, if you finish after, your certificate will state Wrexham University.
